Tour description

Discover iconic filming locations on Djerba, explore the ancient ksour that inspired the planet Tatooine, and visit the famous troglodyte hotel used as the Lars family home. Along the way, experience authentic Berber villages, traditional architecture, breathtaking desert landscapes, and overnight stays in historic accommodations. This tour combines cinematic history with the cultural heritage of southern Tunisia. Day 1: Mos Eisley and Ben Kenobi’s House Begin your Star Wars adventure on the island of Djerba, where several memorable scenes from Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope were filmed. Ajim – Mos Eisley (Episode IV) Explore the locations associated with the fictional spaceport of Mos Eisley: The Stormtrooper Checkpoint: Discover the location where Ben Kenobi and Luke Skywalker are stopped by Imperial stormtroopers. The original filming location can be difficult to recognize today because the movie sets were modified during filming. Chalmun’s Cantina: See the building associated with the famous Mos Eisley Cantina. Originally a traditional Berber bakery, the structure has deteriorated over the years and has been the subject of efforts to preserve its cinematic heritage. The Millennium Falcon’s Escape: Visit the narrow alley where the Millennium Falcon takes off while escaping the stormtroopers. Although it can be difficult to find, the location remains relatively recognizable. Ajim – Ben Kenobi’s House (Episode IV) Continue approximately 3 km north of Ajim along the coastal road towards Sidi Jemour. Here, you will find the old fisherman’s house used during the original filming in April 1976 as Ben Kenobi’s home during his exile on Tatooine. This iconic site has become an important destination for Star Wars fans and is regularly maintained. Sidi Jemour – Anchorhead and Mos Eisley (Episode IV) Continue along the coast to Sidi Jemour, a traditional religious site and pilgrimage destination. This location was used for several scenes in A New Hope, including scenes associated with Anchorhead and the arrival of Luke and Ben in a landspeeder near Mos Eisley. In the afternoon, depart for Beni Khedache and settle into Ksar Jouamaa, a historic rural guesthouse housed in an 18th-century fortified granary. Enjoy an overnight stay in this unique setting, surrounded by the heritage and landscapes of southern Tunisia. Accommodation: Ksar Jouamaa – historic rural guesthouse. Day 2: Planet Tatooine and the Slave Quarters After breakfast, travel towards Tataouine, the town whose name inspired the fictional planet Tatooine. Although no specific Star Wars scenes were filmed in the town itself, the surrounding region contains several important filming locations. Ksar Hadada – Mos Espa (Episode I) Your first stop is Ksar Hadada, one of the historic fortified granaries used as a filming location for Mos Espa in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. In August 1997, parts of the complex served as the setting for the slave quarters, including scenes involving Qui-Gon Jinn communicating with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Shmi Skywalker. Chenini – Traditional Berber Village Continue to Chenini, a spectacular Berber village built into the mountainside. Enjoy a guided walk with a local guide and discover the village’s traditional architecture, history, and cultural heritage. After the visit, enjoy a traditional Tunisian lunch at a local restaurant. Ksar Ouled Soltane – Mos Espa (Episode I) In the afternoon, visit Ksar Ouled Soltane, one of the best-preserved and most impressive fortified granaries in southern Tunisia. This remarkable complex features two courtyards and more than 400 traditional storage chambers, known as ghorfas, arranged across several levels. Like Ksar Hadada, this historic site was used as a filming location for the slave quarters of Mos Espa in The Phantom Menace. At the end of the day, return to Ksar Jouamaa for your second overnight stay in this historic 18th-century setting. Accommodation: Ksar Jouamaa – historic rural guesthouse. Day 3: Sidi Idriss Hotel and the Troglodyte Village of Matmata After breakfast, head to Matmata to discover one of Tunisia’s most famous Star Wars filming locations: Hotel Sidi Idriss, a traditional troglodyte dwelling carved into the earth. The hotel consists of five interconnected courtyards, four surrounded by rooms and a fifth known as the Star Wars courtyard, which serves as the restaurant. Several areas were used in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope as the Lars family’s home, including the dining room, kitchen, and courtyard. The dining room’s distinctive ceiling decoration was recreated for the filming of Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, approximately 24 years after the original film. Enjoy lunch at the hotel, with the special opportunity to sit at the same table associated with Luke Skywalker in this iconic filming location. After lunch, begin your return journey to Djerba, bringing your Star Wars adventure through southern Tunisia to an end. End of services.
