Desert Adventure: Camel Trek & Wild Camping – 7 Days (From Tunis)

Embark on an unforgettable 7-day Sahara Desert adventure from Tunis, combining Tunisia’s Berber heritage with an authentic camel trek through the spectacular dunes of southern Tunisia. Discover the traditional troglodyte homes of Matmata, explore the lively souk of Douz, and spend magical nights in desert bivouacs at Sidi Jemil, Ommi Henda, and Zataya. Day 1 – Welcome to Tunisia

Upon arrival at Tunis-Carthage International Airport, you will be welcomed by our team and transferred to your hotel in Tunis. Settle in and enjoy some time to relax before beginning your adventure through Tunisia’s fascinating landscapes and cultural heritage.

Day 2 – Matmata, Douz, and Your First Night in the Desert

After breakfast, depart from Tunis in a comfortable vehicle and travel south towards Douz, known as the gateway to the Sahara Desert.

Along the way, visit Matmata, famous for its traditional troglodyte dwellings carved into the earth. Discover a local Berber home and experience Tunisian hospitality with a tasting of traditional bread, olive oil, and tea.

Continue to Douz, where you will meet your camel drivers and prepare for your desert trek. After lunch, embark on an approximately two-hour camel ride across the sandy landscape towards your first campsite.

Upon arrival, help set up camp and gather around the fire with your team. Enjoy dinner prepared over a wood fire, including traditional bread baked in the hot sand. End the evening with Bedouin songs around the campfire and a night beneath the starry desert sky.

Day 3 – Exploring Sidi Jemil

After breakfast, continue your trek towards Sidi Jemil, a remarkable desert area known for its distinctive landscapes and flint formations. Along the way, explore the terrain and take time to discover small geological specimens scattered across the desert.

Enjoy lunch during the trek before continuing towards the beautiful dunes of Sidi Jemil. As the day draws to a close, admire the changing colours of the sand and enjoy a breathtaking sunset over the Sahara.

Gather for dinner at camp and spend another peaceful night surrounded by the vast desert landscape.

Day 4 – Trekking Towards the Dunes of Ommi Henda

Wake up early to witness the sunrise over the Sahara. After breakfast, resume your trek towards Ommi Henda, crossing majestic dunes and seemingly endless stretches of golden sand.

Stop at Ouinat Rajah to enjoy lunch before continuing through the remote desert landscape. By late afternoon, reach your campsite at Ommi Henda, where you can relax and appreciate the tranquillity of the Sahara.

As night falls, enjoy dinner and the peaceful atmosphere of the desert beneath a spectacular canopy of stars.

Day 5 – Discovering Zataya

After breakfast, continue your desert journey towards Zataya. Experience the changing scenery as you travel through open sandy plains and rolling dunes, discovering the beauty and isolation of Tunisia’s Sahara.

Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way before reaching your campsite at Zataya. Spend the evening relaxing in the desert, sharing dinner with your team, and enjoying the final night of your trekking adventure beneath the stars.

Overnight: Desert bivouac at Zataya.

Day 6 – Douz, Tamezret, Matmata, and Return to Tunis

After breakfast, leave the desert and travel back towards Douz. Explore the traditional souk, where you can discover local products, handicrafts, and the lively atmosphere of this southern Tunisian town.

Continue to Tamezret, a picturesque Berber village known for its traditional architecture and hilltop setting. Stop to take photographs and admire the surrounding landscape.

Next, visit Matmata and discover a traditional troglodyte home, learning about the distinctive underground dwellings that have shaped local life for generations. Enjoy a warm welcome from a local family, including a tasting of traditional bread, virgin olive oil, honey, and rosemary-infused tea. A small tip for your hosts is appreciated.

Lunch will be served in a local homestay, giving you the opportunity to experience authentic Tunisian cuisine and local hospitality.

In the afternoon, begin your return journey to Tunis and transfer to your hotel upon arrival.

Day 7 – Departure from Tunis

Enjoy your final breakfast in Tunisia and some free time, depending on your flight schedule. At the appropriate time, you will be transferred to Tunis-Carthage International Airport for your departure.
