Stars & Hidden Lands: An Epic 3-Day Journey in Tunisia From Djerba

Day 1: Djerba – Chenini – Ksar Ghilane

Your adventure begins with pickup from your accommodation in Djerba or Zarzis. Travel towards the picturesque Berber village of Chenini, where a local guide will introduce you to the village’s fascinating history, traditional architecture, and cultural heritage.

Continue to Ksar Ghilane, a beautiful oasis surrounded by the golden dunes of the Sahara. Famous for its natural hot spring, this peaceful desert destination offers the perfect opportunity to unwind and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the Sahara.

Arriving towards sunset, take some free time to explore the dunes and admire the changing colours of the desert. In the evening, gather around the campfire and discover the traditional preparation of sand bread, baked beneath the hot sand and glowing embers. Enjoy the tranquillity of the desert and a memorable night beneath a spectacular star-filled sky.

Overnight: Traditional desert tented camp at Ksar Ghilane.

Day 2: Ksar Ghilane – Chott El Jerid – Chebika – Tamerza – Ong Jemel – Tozeur

After breakfast, set off towards Tozeur, travelling through the Douz region and across the spectacular landscapes of southern Tunisia. Stop at Chott El Jerid, the country’s famous salt lake, for photographs of its vast, otherworldly scenery.

Continue to Chebika, a beautiful mountain oasis where a local guide will lead you on an approximately 40-minute walk through dramatic rock formations, palm trees, and natural springs. Then discover Tamerza and its impressive waterfall, surrounded by rugged mountain landscapes.

Enjoy an authentic lunch at a local restaurant, offering a taste of Tunisian hospitality and regional cuisine.

In the afternoon, experience an exciting 4x4 adventure across Chott El Gharsa and along sections of the historic Paris-Dakar Rally route. Stop for photographs at Ong Jemel, known for its striking rock formations, before crossing the desert terrain towards Mos Espa, one of Tunisia’s most famous Star Wars film sets.

Before reaching your hotel, make a final stop at the scenic Nefta Basket, known locally as La Corbeille de Nefta, a distinctive oasis landscape.

Day 3: Tozeur – Douz – Matmata – Toujane – Djerba

After breakfast, begin the day with a visit to the historic medina of Tozeur, famous for its traditional brick architecture and charming streets.

Continue towards Douz, stopping at the impressive petrified dunes of Debebecha for photographs. In Douz, explore the lively local market and experience the atmosphere of this traditional desert town. For an extra touch of adventure, you can choose an optional camel ride or quad biking experience across the dunes.

Enjoy lunch at a 4-star hotel in Douz before continuing to Matmata, a remarkable Berber village famous for its traditional underground homes. Visit a troglodyte house and meet a welcoming local family, who will introduce you to regional traditions and offer a taste of local hospitality, including rosemary tea, olive oil, honey, and homemade bread.

Next, visit Hotel Sidi Idriss, an iconic filming location associated with the Star Wars saga, where you can discover the distinctive underground architecture and cinematic history of the site.

On the return journey to Djerba, stop in Toujane, a charming Berber village nestled among the mountains, for a final photo opportunity and a chance to admire the spectacular scenery.

Arrive back in Djerba after three unforgettable days exploring the landscapes, traditions, and cinematic wonders of southern Tunisia.
